Short summaryThe main objective of the project is the implementation of an efficient and specific physical activity programme for older persons (80+). Keeping balance and exercising with weights are parts of the training programme to promote physical health and to prevent falls, which often occur to this age group. By strengthening the muscles and improving the balance the project aims at improving the feeling of security and safety, self-determination and quality of life.
The project started in 2005 with 9 different models each located in a different setting (e.g. nursing homes, assisted living, day care, senior centre, senior housing association). Every institution followed the same concept initiated by the sports university of Cologne. It contains specific excercises, 45-60 minutes twice a week.
Main objectives
  • By strengthening the muscles and improving the balance the project aims at improving the feeling of security and safety, self-determination and quality of life.
Main activities
  • The main activities consist of physical activity programme including
  • a weight-lifting training,
  • a balance training,
  • and exercises to train activies of daily living.
Evaluationyes
Description of evaluationThe evaluation includes a panel design at four stages within one year with an intervention group of 51 persons (6 male, 45 female).
The main objective of the panel is to examine sensomotorical and cognitive abilities such as coordination skills, muscle strength, flexibility, cognitive ability, dependence on care and daily living skills, general health and well-being.
Main results
  • Cost effectiveness and relief-effects:
  • Evaluation results show, that the "fit for 100"-training programme improves the mental and physical fitness even for old aged people. It also counters the aging process (compression of morbidity"). This leads to an enormous financial saving: i.e. annual costs of 3000 € get already amortized if 5 particiants of the programme remain one month longer in outpatient care (financial difference between inpatients and outpatients: 639€ person/year).
  • Relief-effects for the nursing staff (physical and mentally) as well as financial savings through reduced risks of falls will be looked at in future.

2. EvaluationPanel design at four stages within one year with an intervention group of 51 persons (6 male, 45 female).
Main objective of the panel is to examine sensomotorical and cognitive abilities such as coordination skills, muscle strength, flexibility, cognitive ability, dependence on care and daily living skills, general health and well-being.
4. SustainabilityAfter a period of start-up financing the projects became financially independent; furthermore the implementation of new training groups in North Rhine Westphalia is planned.
5. Voice of older people
6. Model involves visible and invisible target groupsThe project is especially focused on the "oldest old" and old aged persons suffering from dementia.
8. Geographical and physical accessibilityThe programme takes place in different settings/institutions which relevant and well-known to the elderly (e.g. residential homes, assisted living, day care...).
9. Well-grounded theoretical approachThe programme takes place in different settings/institutions which relevant and well-known to the elderly (e.g. residential homes, assisted living, day care...). Scientific steering through the sports university of Cologne.

Background Information on Database

The aim of the second phase of the healthPROelderly project was to collect models of good practice in the area of health promotion for older people. One of the main activities in this project phase was to elicit criteria by which to choose such models in each of the participating countries. The exclusion criteria and inclusion criteria were elicited by all project partners on the basis of the literature overview of health promotion for older people carried out in the first project phase. Project partners searched for models in their countries by: 1) using the literature databases they had compiled; 2) by using health promotion databases and other information available on internet and 3) by consulting their national boards and other experts.
